How to manually measure distances

This article will cover how to manually measure distances, including the Ruler Tool, the "measure from here" selection, how to create measurement lines with specific dimensions, and how to create 90 degree segmented lines.

How to use the ruler tool

  • Click on the Ruler icon in the toolbar on the right side of the screen.

  • Click anywhere on the property to start the measurement line. 
  • Double click in the spot you’d like to end the measurement line.  

Create segmented lines by clicking in each of the locations you'd like to display a measurement for. Double click to end the line. 

  • Click on the measurement line and then on the Trash can icon to delete it.

How to use the "measure from here" selection

  • Right click anywhere on the screen. This brings up a panel next to your cursor. 
  • Click on the "measure from here" option. This selection automatically starts your measurement line.
  • Double click on the spot you’d like to end the measurement line. 
  • To move or edit the measurement line, hover your mouse over it, and when the line is visually thicker, left click. You’ll see bubbles on each end and in the middle of the measurement line.
    • Click and drag the bubble on either end of the line to edit its length.
    • Click and drag the line to move it. 
    • Click and drag the bubble in the middle of the line to create segments. 
    • Use the editing panel on the left side of the screen to change the color, style, or width of the measurement line. 
    • Toggle on or off distances in the editing panel on the left side of the screen.

How to create a measurement line with a specific distance

  • Start a measurement line using either the Ruler tool or the "measure from here" selection (see above).
  • Press enter/return on your keyboard. You'll notice that the measurement bubble is now highlighted. 
  • Type in the specific distance. 
  • Press enter/return on your keyboard to secure that line. Continue these steps until you have as many segments as needed.

Press esc on your keyboard to undo a segment of a line. 

  • Double click the last created bubble to end your line.

How to create a 90-degree segmented line

  • Start a measurement line using either the Ruler tool or the "measure from here" selection (see above).
  • Click a second time to start the first segment of a measurement line. You'll see a dotted green line stem from the end of the current measurement segment. That indicates the 90 degree angle.

  • Align the dotted mouse line on top of the green 90-degree line and click to secure the second segment

  • Click on the Magnet tool (AKA Toggle Snap) in the tool bar on the right side of the screen.

  • Bring your dotted mouse line near the green 90-degree line. You'll see that with the Toggle Snap tool on, the mouse line snaps to the 90-degree line, which eliminates manual alignment of the lines. 
  • Click to secure the next segment.
